Heritage Keepers Tour Delphi Opera House
The Heritage Keepers Club of 3rd-graders from Delphi Community Elementary School toured the Delphi Opera House construction site on February 10, 2015.
Mark Smith, Carroll County historian, accompanied the 24 students on the bus after school. Club sponsor Bill Shidler, Assistant Principal of D.C.E.S., and D.C.E.S. Secretary Laura Green helped to chaperone the group.
Travis Hackman, site superintendent for Shiel Sexton—the construction management firm for the Delphi Opera House restoration project—was on hand to describe the construction process and to shepherd the kids around the site. Anita Werling, Chair of the DPS Opera House Advisory Board, gave an overview of the history of the opera house and fielded questions. Up in the auditorium, Mark Smith recited a poem by Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley who performed in the opera house at least six times.
Following the tour, the Heritage Keepers signed steel columns in the addition to the opera house along with a section of plywood which will deck part of the stage.
